A Father’s Day Ode: To Our Dads, Uncles, Brothers, and the Bigger African Village
Father’s Day always hits different. For some, it brings laughter and plans to fire up the grill with Dad. For others, like me, it stirs up a cocktail of emotions — gratitude, longing, and a big, nostalgic smile.
My dad wasn’t the softest man on the block. Nope. He was full-on African dad mode: direct, determined, and occasionally daunting — especially when it came to our futures. He had a vision: “One of you must be a doctor. Lawyer. Engineer. No arguments.” It felt like a broken record, but looking back, it was love wrapped in legacy.
I grew up with three brothers, and each of us had our moments with him — those awkward career conversations, the strict school expectations, the unspoken love language of “tough love.” But you know what else never changed? Morning devotions.
Rain or shine, school day or holiday — morning devotions were non-negotiable. If you were even just visiting our house and it was devotion time, you'd be pulled in like a long-lost cousin. No escaping it. He’d call everyone, open that well-worn Bible, lead us in singing, share a word, and end with a powerful prayer. That rhythm shaped us — anchored us. It was how he gave us more than discipline. He gave us faith.
Some of us grew into the professionals he envisioned. Some carved out our own path, blending creativity with culture. And then there’s me — a beautiful mix of both. Because somewhere in between his passion and my purpose, we met. And that’s a bond I carry every day.
The African Father Formula
African dads can be… iconic. Whether it’s their wise silence, the way they flick their hands when they talk, or how they switch to your full name when things get serious, they bring a unique presence to parenting. But beyond the stereotypes is something deeper — a desire to provide, to protect, and to pass something on.
And for those who grew up without a father figure at home, we see you too. Many of us were raised by uncles, older brothers, pastors, teachers, or that neighborhood “Papa” who always had a word of advice and a plastic chair ready for you. The African village stepped in — and stepped up.
💔 A Moment for Those Missing Dad This Year
For some, this Father’s Day comes with a different kind of weight.
If you’ve lost your dad — whether years ago or just last month — this day can feel unbearable. I spent time today with two people who recently lost theirs, and the silence tomorrow will echo louder than any celebration. The grief feels endless, like a wound that never fully heals.
But please know: you are not alone. Some days will knock the wind out of you. But some days — like tiny glimmers — will let you smile again through the ache. His love hasn’t left. It just lives differently now — in the way you speak, the way you lead, the way you love others.
So cry if you must. Share a story. Light a candle. Or sit in silence and feel his presence. Whatever it looks like for you, know that your heart is seen and held.

So, here’s to all the Dads who dreamed big for us, who loved us through discipline, and who planted the seeds of greatness even when we didn’t fully understand it yet.
To the fathers who led with scripture, sang hymns off-key but from the heart, and prayed over our lives with vision.
To the ones who stood in the gap — the men in the village, the mentors, the big brothers — we see you, we thank you, and we celebrate you too.
And to those missing their fathers — may you find comfort in your memories, strength in your steps, and love that still surrounds you.
Happy Father’s Day! May your day be full of jollof, joy, and just the right amount of rest. 😄👑
